2012- Top 50 Hindi songs (Part 2/5)

2012- Top 50 Hindi songs
(Part 2/5)

This has been a challenge to pick a few good songs (believe me it is a damn tough thing to do) and create a list of the best songs in a year. Following is the Part 2 of the best songs that managed to stick in the head over the year. This is purely a personal choice and no science or mathematics has gone into the selection.

40. Tung tung (MTV Sound Trippin)
Music: Sneha Khanwalkar Singers: Jyoti Nooran, Sultana Nooran

The 1st episode of this innovative music creation from the sounds of daily life takes you to Qila Raipur, the place where Rural Olympics are held. Sneha nails the essence of Punjab and creates the perfect blend of rusticness and enthusiasm.

39. Duaa (Shanghai)
Lyrics: Neelesh Mishra Music: Vishal-Shekhar Singers: Vishal Dadlani, Arijit Singh, Nandini Srikar

A refreshingly new voice of Nandini that seems to give a feel of Ghazalesque tone to this song. Well supported by Vishal, he has been proving time and again that he is hugely talented and highly versatile.

38. Jugni Allah wali (Cocktail)
Lyrics: Arif Lohar/Folk Music: Pritam Singers: Arif Lohar, Harshdeep Kaur

A stripped down version of the original Pakistani Coke Studio version sung again by Arif Lohar, this song deserves a mention onto the list simply for bringing its predecessor to the fore. A brilliant folk song, check the original for a better experience.

37. Taar Bijli (Gangs of Wasseypur-2)

Lyrics: Varun Grover Music: Sneha Khanwalkar Singers: Padamshree Sharda Sinha

One wonders where do such singers come from. One wonders how these songs are made. One wonders how well these are emoted on screen. How well can an experiment in music pay off. Wishing more experiments on these lines take place.

36. Darmiyaan (Jodi Breakers)

Lyrics: Irshad Kamil Music: Salim-Suleiman Singers: Shafqat Amanat Ali, Clinton Cerejo

The song belongs wholly, completely, only to Shafqat Amanat Ali. Taking any song to a different level altogether is his forte and he has once again proven this with this song.

35. Hosanna (Ek Deewana Tha)
Lyrics: Javed Akhtar Music: A.R.Rahman Singers: Leon Dsouza, Suzanne D’Mello

This Rahman love song sounds better in the original Tamil version- Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya. Javed Akhtar has been a letdown in this entire album which was touted as Rahman-Akhtar special.

34. Farrukhabadi (Luv shuv tey chicken Khurana)
Lyrics: Shellee Music: Amit Trivedi Singers: Labh Jhanjhua

Frankly, LSTCK isn’t an Amit Trivedi great. However, coming up with peppy Punjabi numbers right after the Southern flavors of Aiyya within weeks is something that has to be appreciated. Going with his favorite Punjabi favorite, Labh Jhanjhua this song is a full fun song.

33. Ala Barfi (Barfi)
Lyrics: Swanand Kirkire Music: Pritam Singers: Mohit Chauhan/ Swanand Kirkire

I love the songs those dish out a story to support the narrative. This is certainly one that gives the background about the lead character of the film and is presented in the format of a lullaby. Such songs usually don’t go wrong and are loved by toddlers to grannies. Mohit is brilliant. Also check out Swanand’s version.

32. Gustakh Dil (English Vinglish)
Lyrics: Swanand Kirkire Music: Amit Trivedi Singers: Shilpa Rao

Great lyrics coupled by the clear and husky voice of Shilpa Rao gel really well with Trivedi’s staple music. Certain musical nuances in the song can just give you goose-bumps.

31. Aahatein (Ek main aur Ek tu)
Lyrics: Amitabh Bhattacharya Music: Amit Trivedi Singers: Karthik, Shilpa Rao

Much like the previous song on the list, this melodious and soothing tune to which Shilpa Rao has lent the vocals creates a good sad-romantic kind of feel. The lyrics by Amitabh Bhattacharaya are the soul of this song.
